The Unique Circulatory System of Octopuses

Octopuses are fascinating creatures with some very unusual biological features. One of the most remarkable is their circulatory system, which includes three hearts. Two of these hearts pump blood to the gills, where oxygen is absorbed, while the third heart pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. This unique system helps octopuses thrive in their underwater environment, where oxygen levels can vary and the demand for oxygen is high due to their active and complex lifestyle.

How the Hearts Function


Interestingly, when an octopus swims, the heart that delivers blood to the body temporarily stops beating, which is why octopuses tend to prefer crawling rather than swimming. Swimming requires more energy and can be exhausting for them. The three hearts work in a coordinated way to ensure that oxygen is efficiently distributed throughout their bodies, supporting their ability to perform complex behaviors, such as camouflage, problem-solving, and hunting.
